This morning, the staff and the mushers were worrying about icy conditions. But fortunately; with the work of the trail team of the resorts, and the trailbreakers of LGO, the trail has been made runable by competitive teams. Hopefully, this afternoon for the second stage of the day, the snow finaly came. It is supposed to keep on falling the whole night long, which should brings better trail conditions.

On the technical trail of the morning, the one who made the fastest time was a rookie., the Czech Martin Bily. And for sure, the 2011 rookies have already shown that they are competitive. Milos Gonda, with his impressive run of this afternoon - he takes the third place of the stage - grabs the third place of the general rankings from Martin Bily, for one second. It looks like the struggle for the rookie of the year award will be tight and exciting.

But it also looks like that's all they could get as the battle for first place seems to turn once again into a duel between the two dominant mushers of the last two years: Emil Inauen and Radek Havrda. If there's only two minutes between them, they've already dig a gap of 20 minutes on the third.
Last year, Inauen grabbed the first place on the first stage and never left it. Will he be able to repeat that impressive feat once again ? He doubt about it. He feels like his team doesn't have the same smooth and fast gait it had last year.
It should be because of a training on ATV longer than expected due to a late arrival of snow in Norway this winter. He unpurposely worked more on strenght than on speed. As he said: "I don't feel the same speed in my team but nobody can beat me on uphills." We'll see if it will be enough for him to keep his title.

One experienced musher not to forget is Ketil Reitan. Being only nine minutes away from the third place, he remains more than ever a serious contender to the podium and maybe for more. His team has speed and endurance. This could pay on the longer stages.
