Dogsitter available to Berlin free of charge, very shortly

  • Ich glaube dafür ist Deutschland nicht offen genug! Wir sind da a bissl anders als Amis!

Translation: i think German People are not so open minded as People in US! We don't Trust Stranges so easily and we are very carefully with dogsitters. Don't take it personal! May you find somebody in Berlin who finds your idea very intresting!

  • Thank you sorcha so much for the information about haushueter.org! And the rest of you for supporting/clarifying comments. I do understand completely that this idea of dog sitting and letting a stranger in your home may sound weird at first. But I believe also that this type of activity will be more and more common in the future. And sorcha, you picked up the very problem I'm dealing with here. That is, there is no official site that would bring the home owners and sitters together in Berlin and that I could register to. It would be more secure to me as well (!!).

However, I have traveled before and I have learned to stay away from trouble (one year in the U.S. for example). I do not take uncontrollable risks. Let's say that somebody offers to have me as a dog sitter. In this case I would contact this person by phone. And/Or, if possible, I would ask them to register to Trusted Housesitters. For home owners there is a free 5 months' trial (by the way:). I understand that on this site they have a contract that is filled between both parties involved. That increases the amount of security. Moreover, the home owners get to give a grade to the home sitter after the assignment. At least I want to have five stars (!!).

About my trustworthyness, what can I say? Well, I have worked for the local police in 2006 and before taking on that job they made a security check on me. Which, of course, was clear (I wouldn't have gotten the job, if it wasn't). I can send a copy of the testimonial if needed. It is in Finnish but there are all the logos and so on. I also made an internship for the National Bureau of Investigation (it is the FBI of Finland) to help to solve economic crime. So, I tend to consider myself more of a good guy, rather than bad.

And for those who want to find me in Trusted Housesitters pls go to trustedhousesitters -> Find a House sitter. There you will find searh boxes, one of them saying 'current location'. Choose 'Finland' -> Refine search. There you will find four listings, one of which is mine.

So, how does this sound? Do you still think I'm weird ;) ?

  • Sounds interessting. But I wouldnt do it.

I have still problems in Germany / Berlin to choose a good sitter and I have problems to choose a HuTa (Company for sitting) too. So its difficult for me to trust a person from the internet, from an other country....and so on.

My pet is "everything" for me and I wouldnt let anybody near him. Also i wouldnt let my dog waiting outside a supermarket....same thing for me.

    Good luck anyway!

(Sorry for my english :hust: )

  • Zitat

So, how does this sound? Do you still think I'm weird ;) ?

No, now your request finally makes sense to me.

Why didn´t you tell in the first place that you´re looking for accomodation in berlin and that you would´t mind sitting a dog meanwhile? ;)

However, the idea sounds nice and I keep my fingers crossed for you to find a shelter with a dog you can take care of =)

  • You could try and announce in a weekly free newspaper like Kurz & Fündig or the online version, Quoka.de. Or various online classifieds such as the German ebay or dhd24 or what else is there? Just say that you are offering your services as house/apartment sitter and dog sitter and you have references and then your contact details..

I can't imagine that there won't be anyone interested in the whole of Berlin ;) but people here in this community are generally on the cautious side (as ReallyRed said) and don't trust just anyone with their dogs even less than their homes, I would imagine. Personally, I tend to believe you, but I don't have anything for you to sit ;)

With contracts it sounds quite good actually, that site. Though I couldn't find anything about that at first sight (not even in the FAQs), so they might want to update their page :D makes it difficult for cautious German people to try it out.

PS: Hm. If you're less about actual house sitting and just want to work with dogs, you could also stay in a hostel and help out in a local shelter, as has been suggested?

PPS: Still googled (the concept hooked me). Apparently in Germany such house sitting is done a little differently, they rather rent out the apartment for the time of the vacation. So it seems to be the other way round, you would be expected to pay rent, not to get paid for watching the house.
Sometimes there are such announcements at portals where you can also find apartments to rent, like http://www.wg-gesucht.de or http://www.immowelt24.de but I'm not sure how you could find them, can you navigate around German sites? Then look for "befristete Miete" (temporary rent).

  • Good morning,
Thank you spinderella for your support! And sorcha, there is actually a basis for contract in FAQ in trusted housesitters, at 'Is there a house sitting assignment form we can use?'. The site says that it is not a legal document but can be used as a basis for one. I think it is quite thorough and good, actually. And once both parties sign it and there are all the dates etc, it becomes legal and binds both parties (I study law on the side of working).

And actually, I do have an advertisement in Quoka and eBay ;) I hope this tells you that I'm totally devoted to this thing.

And, the idea is to save money on both parties. This is why I'm not going to a hostel or renting a house. There are actually people who are going on holiday and for some reason or another their friends and relatives can't help out at looking after their dogs. My offer is aimed at these kind of people. My intention is to be of help, not a nuisance for anyone.

    Let's have a good-one, shall we!?

  • (sorry my english is not goog)

No responsible dog owner trust someone completely unknown

Who knows how you deal with a dog at all?

Do you know the official dog regulations? You need a permit for certain dog breeds and a
police clearance to run with dogs of spezielle breeds

What about insurance if something happens?

I think you are looking for a place to make free holiday and nothing else

  • Why don´t u use couchsurfing.org to find a host in Berlin?
Maybe you can help him with something while u´re staying at his house.
(Maybe even with the dog if there is one. ;) )
