Import mixed breed dogs from the US

    The company I work for (a fortune 50 company) has asked that I relocate to Berlin from the US. It has come to my attention that I may have two "listenhunds." This category does not exist in the US. According to our veterinarian in the US, they are "bulldog mix" and "hound mix," though they may appear to some to have the blocky-headed look of a "pit bull." Because of their appearance, would they be banned from entry to Germany? Even if their paperwork is not listed as such? I understand there are many rules and regulations - the wesentest, insurance, microchipping, spay/neuter, and all of that I am happy to comply with.

    es gibt keine einheitlichen Bestimmungen in Deutschland. Jedes Bundesland hat eigene Regelungen. Einen Listenhund nach Sachsen-Anhalt einzuführen ist zum Beispiel nicht erlaubt. Nach Thüringen hingegen gar kein Problem. Du solltest also schauen wo genau hin der Flug mit dem Hund geht und direkt Informationen von diesem flughafen anfordern.

    Edit: Die Hundegesetze der einzelnen Bundesländer sind sehr uneinheitlich, betreffen aber nur Hunde, die schon hier leben/im Land geboren werden. Die Einfuhr (mit dem Ziel des längeren Aufenthaltes, nicht als Tourist) ist noch mal was anderes, da greift dann z.B. das HundVerbrEinfG.

    :bindafür: danke für die Ergänzung. Dass da wirklich welche komplett verboten sind, ist schon gruselig. Da dieser Artikel aber schon etwas älter ist sollte man vielleicht mal mit der Anwältin Kontakt aufnehmen ob es derzeit immer noch genauso ist.

    Das ist nicht korrekt. Einige Rassen unterliegen bundesweitem Einführungsverbot. Pit Bull, American Staffordshire Terrier etc.

    I would contact the customs authoritys before I would take any actions. Dogs of certain breeds are taken away from owners on daily bases if imported illegaly.
    Please be sure that you have clearance to travel with the dogs before entering Germany.

    I think it would be wise to contact the German authorities before trying to enter the country with the dogs. So that there won‘t be any unpleasant surprises at the airport.


    I would try the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei), formerly the German border patrol. They should know.

    Thank you - this was my next question. I found this on the previously provided website: "Before traveling, you should make inquiries at your local competent office of public order if you have any doubts about the breeds of dog classified as dangerous or about the documents required."


    What is the local competent office of public order? Would that be the German Federal Police?

    Anja wir haben aber ein absolutes Importverbot fuer gewisse Rassen und deren Mixe! Und darum geht's ja. Landesrecht steht nicht ueber Bundesrecht ;) (EDIT: Ups zu lahm)

    You should talk to customs and ask them directly. They will know and you would have a correct answer!
